GUWAHATI: Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal laid the foundation stone of a new flyover connection RG Baruah Road with Bishnu Rabha Flyover at Ganeshguri Chariali in the city on Wednesday. The PWD Department has taken up construction of the 476 meter flyover under State Own Priority Scheme-General (SOPD-G), 2018-19 with financial outlay of Rs 58.76 crore.
Speaking on the occasion, Chief Minister Sonowal said that the new initiative would significantly help in easing out traffic congestion at Ganeshguri, which is one of the busiest commercial junctions of the city. Sonowal said that the state government aims at transforming Guwahati as the gateway to the South East Asian countries. Keeping this in mind, Guwahati State Capital Region has been notified apart from implementation of various development projects to develop Guwahati as Smart City and to improve livelihood standard of the city residents, he said.
Stating that tourist footfall has significantly gone up in the state as a result of state government initiatives, Chief Minister Sonowal also urged the people to maintain the standard of hospitality for which the state is known for. According to a press release, the PWD Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma while speaking on the occasion said that once completed, the new arm of the flyover would facilitate smooth traffic movement directly from RGB Road to Khanapara and Ulubari to RGB Road. Moreover saying that traffic congestion would reduce by 35% as a result of the new flyover, Sarma informed that 18 months completion period has been fixed for the project. He also said that the PWD Department has already mooted plans for construction of flyovers connecting Ganesh Mandir to Ganeshguri and at GNRC point.
Guwahati MP Bijoya Chakraborty also spoke on the occasion. Dispur MLA Atul Bora, CEM of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council Tuliram Ronghang, Commissioner & Secretary of PWD Department Rajesh Kemprai along with host of other dignitaries were present on the occasion.
