CM Sarbananda Sonowal lays foundation stone of two-lane flyover in Guwahati

GUWAHATI: With a view to making city roads less congested, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal laid the foundation stone of a two-lane flyover at Sarabbhati intersection on Guwahati-Garbhanga road in the presence of PWD, Finance, Education etc Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday.

The 790-meter-long flyover will be built under SOPD fund of the State government and is targeted to be completed within 24 months.

Speaking on the occasion, Sonowal urged the people to maintain the spirit of Atithi Devo Bhava. The Chief Minister said that in today's age of competition if Guwahati has to be developed as a smart and attractive city, the residents must owe the responsibility to keep the city clean. He said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his first term expressed his vision for building smart cities in the country, including Guwahati. The Assam government taking inspiration from the Prime Minister's vision has been working to improve transportation and connectivity infrastructure in Guwahati so that it could earn the recognition of the visitors as a beautiful place, besides making life for the city dwellers smooth. He also urged the youth to help generating more awareness about civic behaviour among people. The Chief Minister also thanked the people for their support and cooperation during Ambubachi Mela and various national and international events held in the city.

Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that a number of developmental initiatives were taken to give a new look to Guwahati city so that it could immerge as the gateway to the South East Asian nations. He said that the new arm of the Ganesguri Flyover has already been dedicated to the service of the people and the flyover at Supermarket would be completed soon. Further construction work of Maligaon flyover has also been started. He informed that the new flyover at Sarabbhati would be a major boost to connectivity between the two wings of the second Medical College of Guwahati, i.e. MMCH and TB Hospital. The Finance Minister also said that 30% work of the bridge connecting Guwahati and North Guwahati has been completed and the eastern India's longest flyover from Guwahti Club to Noonmati would be taken up soon. He said that a new convention centre is being constructed on the bank of Brahmaputra near Gauhati High Court in the model of Science Centre New Dehli which would give a new dimension to the city in the days to come.
