CM Sarbananda Sonowal opens Assam Bhawan & Trade Centre in Kolkata

GUWAHATI: Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal inaugurated an additional Assam Bhawan and Trade Centre-cum-Youth Hostel built by the State PWD at Salt Lake, Sector 3 in Kolkata on Sunday. The new Assam Bhawan was constructed with a project cost of Rs. 25.18 crore. The eleven-storeyed new building is built with modern amenities and air conditioning. The building has 35 rooms and dormitories separately for men and women.

Speaking on the occasion, Chief Minister Sonowal said that the new Assam Bhawan would strengthen relations between the people of Assam and West Bengal as well as promoting trade activities. The Chief Minister said that due to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s special focus, Assam and North East is on the path of faster development today. He observed that the Act East Policy of the Central government opens new opportunities for the region for growth and Guwahati to emerge as the expressway to the South East Asian countries.

He further viewed that Assam would soon become a front ranking state of the country in terms of development and urged the Assamese diaspora living in Kolkata to contribute positivity in this regard.

Finance Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma in his speech highlighted the development initiatives of the Assam government. He said that for the benefit of people of Assam travelling to other parts of the country, Assam government has taken steps for construction of new Assam Houses. As part of this, the government has already inaugurated Assam Houses at New Delhi and Chennai. He informed that the Assam Bhawans constructed at Vellore and Bengaluru would be opened soon. He also said that the State government plans to build a new Assam Bhawan at Dwarka in New Delhi and a new building at Kolkata by demolishing the old one located at Russel Street.

While Commissioner & Secretary of General Administration department Dr. M Angamuthu delivered the welcome address, Commissioner of PWD (Building) Raj Chakraborty spoke on the occasion. Chief Engineer of PWD Jyotish Sarma made a presentation in the programme. The inaugural programme was attended by MP Dr. Rajdeep Roy, MLAs Ramakanta Deuri and Bimal Bora, Chief Minister’s Media Adviser Hrishikesh Goswami and Chief Minister’s Legal Adviser Santanu Bharali, among others, a press release said.
