GUWAHATI: Rajiv Bhavan, the state headquarters of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) in Guwahati, witnessed a hustle and bustle by the members on Friday after the Supreme Court of India stayed the conviction of Rahul Gandhi in the criminal defamation case against him over his 'Modi surname' remark.

After the stay order was announced, the members of the APCC were on a celebration spree involving the distribution of sweets and shouting of slogans like 'Ganatantrar joy' (victory of democracy).

APCC president Bhupen Borah said, "This is the triumph of truth and justice. This judgement has raised our trust and respect for the court. It was a conspiracy to stop Rahul Gandhi's vocal voice against the misdeeds of the BJP-led Government at the Centre from being heard openly. The BJP can harass us through the misuse of power, but it cannot deviate us from the path of truth and justice. We will keep making the failure of the government public."

CLP leader Debatrata Saikia said, "We were of the view that Rahul Gandhi was dismissed as an MP through a conspiracy. The judgement delivered by the Supreme Court today stayed the sentence of maximum punishment. The trial court failed to show the reason why Rahul Gandhi was given the maximum punishment, and that led the apex court to stay the order. Now Rahul Gandhi will be back as an MP. This is the triumph of democracy."
