Congress members across the State paid glowing tributes to former Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on his first death anniversary on Tuesday.

GUWAHATI: Congress members across the State paid glowing tributes to former Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on his first death anniversary on Tuesday.

The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) organized shradhanjali programmes in every district in memory of the Congress stalwart and three-time Chief Minister of Assam. At the Congress head office, Rajiv Bhavan in Guwahati, the shradhanjali programme began at 10.30 am with APCC president Bhupen Kumar Bora leading the proceedings by paying floral tributes to the leader. Leader of the Opposition in Assam Legislative Assembly, Debabrata Saikia, Rajya Sabha MP Ripun Bora, MP and son of Tarun Gogoi, Gaurav Gogoi, former Congress MP Bolin Kuli, APCC executive president Rana Goswami, former MP Dwijen Sarma, former minister and senior Congress leader Abu Saleh Najmuddin, MLA Wazed Ali Choudhury, former minister Akon Bora, MLA Sikhamoni Bora, MLA Khalil Uddin Mazumdar, MLA Abdus Subahan Ali Sarkar, MLA Abdur Rahim Ahmed, APCC general secretary Apurba Kumar Bhattacharjee were among those who paid homage to the former Chief Minister.

An all-religion prayer meeting was also organized at the Rajiv Bhavan where nam-kirtan was held and scriptures of the holy Bible, Koran and Guru Granth Sahib were recited for the eternal peace of the departed soul. APCC president Bhupen Kumar Bora himself played the nagara during the nagara-nam ceremony in tribute to the former Congress leader.

Apart from the Assam Congress leadership, members of the NSUI, Youth Congress, Mahila Congress and Seva Dal were also present during the tribute ceremony.

Tarun Gogoi, who served as the Chief Minister of Assam from 2001 to 2016, was the longest serving Chief Minister of the State. He also served six terms as a Member of Parliament and served as a Union Minister of State in the Ministry of Food Processing Industries. He was posthumously awarded the Padma Bhushan, the country's third-highest civilian honour in 2021.
