Constitution Day of India: Know why we celebrate Constitution Day on November 26

Guwahati: November 26 (today) is celebrated as the Constitution Day as on this day in 1949, the Constitution of India was adopted by the Constituent Assembly which later came into force on January 26, 1950.

The Day is also known as National Law Day.

The purpose of the Constitution Day of India is to create awareness about the importance of theIndian Constitution and its architect Dr. BR Ambedkar.

Dr. BR Ambedkar, the famous social reformer, politician, and jurist had drafted the Indian Constitution. He was appointed as the Chairman of the Constitution Drafting Committee on August 29, 1947. Dr. Ambedkar is known as the Father of the Indian Constitution.

On November 19, 2015, the Ministry of Empowerment and Social Justice notified the Government to celebrate November 26 as 'Constitution Day' every year to promote constitutional values among citizens.

The Constitution is a set of written principles that fulfill the basic political, social, economic and religious principles, procedures, rights, directive principles, restrictions and duties of the government and the citizens of the country. The Constitutions declare India to be a sovereign, secular, socialist, democratic, republic and assures equality, freedom, and justice for all its citizens.
