GUWAHATI: A press meet was organized on Tuesday by a section of aggrieved people of the city to highlight the long-term issues related to the Guwahati Water Supply Project.

Addressing the press meet, Satyabrata Sarma said, "The Guwahati Metropolitan Drinking Water and Sewerage Board was constituted in accordance with the Guwahati Metropolitan Drinking Water and Sewerage Act 2009 but no rules have been framed even after 10 years of its formation." Sarma said the rate of tariff for water supply has not been reduced despite a large number of objections were submitted by the people of Guwahati city seeking reduction in the tariff.

"On the contrary, the Board issued a notification and asked the consumers to apply for water supply connection at the rate fixed by it without taking the objections into consideration," he added.

The aggrieved consumers said that the rate of tariff was fixed by the Board without forming any regulatory authority for the purpose. They said that the move is illegal and demanded cancellation of the fixed rate. The people said the Gauhati High Court has not yet heard a writ petition (Case No WP(C) 9112/2019) filed by the Chiriyakhana Path Jeishthya Nagarik Santha and Avijit Mazumdar seeking withdrawal of the notification on water tariff issued by the Board.
