GUWAHATI: The Coordination Committee of Cab Operators and All India Road Transport Workers Federation (AIRTWF), Assam State committee staged a protest at Koinadhora point, Khanapara on Monday demanding the government to intervene regarding the interstate travel restrictions.

The bodies stated that after the lockdown was lifted, tourist taxis and other commercial vehicles are not being able to operate in Meghalaya and other States due to obstacle created by the respective governments.

The bodies stated that on October 6 in presence of Transport Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary, they discussed their issues. Additionally, they met Commissioner Secretary and Secretary of Transport Department.

They said the protest was staged after they didn't receive any positive response from the Transport Department even after 12 days of their meeting.

On Monday, they submitted a joint memorandum to the Joint Commissioner of Transport Department. They said if their problems are not solved and commercial vehicles are not allowed to enter Meghalaya then they will stage road blockade on Tuesday. However, the bodies decided to withdraw the decision after the Joint Commissioner assured that the government will hold discussions with them on October 22.

In this regard, AIRTWF State committee general secretary Biren sarma stated in a release that if their discussion with the government on October 22 is not successful then from October 23 they will be compelled to stage intense protests.
