Cops grilling baby-lifters from GMCH over old cases

The Bhangagarh police is grilling two women who were arrested yesterday while attempting to take away a four-day-old baby from GMCH

GUWAHATI: The Bhangagarh police is grilling two women who were arrested yesterday while attempting to take away a four-day-old baby from the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), in order to ascertain whether they had any link with previous cases of baby-theft from the hospital.

The police has registered a case (216/22 u/s 366(A)/370(A)/34 of the IPC) against the two women - Promila Deka and Bijita Das. They were produced in court today and remanded to three days' police custody.

According to police sources, the two women had been moving in and around the GMCH for the past several days and attempting to entice needy persons there to sell their babies.

It may be recalled that Deka and Das were detained by guards at the GMCH while trying to entice the attendant of a four-day old infant into selling it in exchange of Rs 5,000.
