Corruption in PWD works in three districts, Gauhati HC asks PAC to examine allegations

The Gauhati High Court has asked the State Government to place for examination by the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of the Assam Legislative Assembly a matter relating to alleged misappropriation of funds under the State Public Works Department (PWD) from 2011-12 to 2018-19.

GUWAHATI: The Gauhati High Court has asked the State Government to place for examination by the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of the Assam Legislative Assembly a matter relating to alleged misappropriation of funds under the State Public Works Department (PWD) from 2011-12 to 2018-19.

The court's directive came at the conclusion of hearing of a PIL filed by an organization named Amguri Naba Nirman Samity. The court observed that the PAC was the proper forum to look into the allegations as they were based on data provided by the office of the Accountant General (Audit), Assam.

The petitioner had alleged that misappropriation of crores of rupees had taken place in execution of various works under the PWD in the Nagaon, Jorhat and Golaghat districts.

The PIL had alleged that the misappropriation of funds took place under the PWD Rural Roads Division, State Roads Division of the Nagaon and Golaghat Districts, Building Division of Jorhat and Dergaon, Titabor Territorial Roads and office of the Chief Engineer (Roads, Bridges) in the name of construction of roads, buildings and bridges. The PIL stated that the people of the areas concerned have had to face a lot of problem due to the corruption in question.

It alleged that Government funds were misappropriated through fake works, additional fund wastage, unauthorized fund wastage etc. All these misappropriations of funds have been revealed in the reports of the Accountant General (Audit), Assam.
