GUWAHATI: The protest was staged by the members of the CPI (M) near the garbage collection centre on the R G Barua road located near the Rajdhani Nursery as the entire locality was filled by the bad odour coming from the plant. They pointed out that there are several locations across the city where garbage is dumped next to the road, which causes problems for the people of the city. They alleged that the local administration lacks the interest to utilize scientific ways to segregate and dispose of the waste generated in the city and this has caused heath and sanitation hazards for the people living near such localities.

CPI(M) district secretary Biren Sharma led the protest in the presence of several other members against these improperly managed garbage dumps and demanded that the local authorities take up scientific garbage disposal processes. They also pointed out that previously the work of garbage disposal was allocated to a private firm but even after spending crores of Rupees, the projects did not work out as they should have. They demanded that the local authorities consult experts in the field to ensure that energy and fertilizers can be created out of the waste and organize awareness events in different wards the inform people about the need for garbage segregation.
