GUWAHATI: The Assam Pradesh Mahila Congress (APMC) has alleged that the criminal activities related to women have skyrocketed during the tenure of the BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) government in Assam.

Stating that the BJP's Beti Bachao Beti Padhao slogan turned into a 'big joke' during the Saffron party's tenure, APMC president Nandita Das said, "As many as 82,957 crime cases against women were registered during the Congress tenure led by Tarun Gogoi from 2011 to 2015. But during BJP tenure led by Sarbananda Sonowal (2016-2020), as many as 1,00,835 cases were registered. It is very much clear that there was a rise of criminal cases related to women during the tenure of Sarbananda Sonowal by more than 17,878 cases."

The crimes include – rape, trafficking, dowry death, cruelty by husband, kidnapping of women/girls, and molestation.

Das underlined that the total number of crimes in the State during the tenure of Tarun Gogoi-led Congress government from 2011-2015 was 4,46,119. However, during the Sarbananda Sonowal-led BJP government from 2016-2020, as many as 5,97,095 crime cases were registered in the State. It is an increase of 1,30,976 number of cases which took place in Assam during Sonowal's regime, she added.

Further, Das pointed out the 'high' maternal and infant mortality rates in Assam.

"The maternal mortality rate in Assam is 215 against one lakh. It is only 43 in Kerela. The Global Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) target aims to reduce the maternal mortality ratio to less than 70 per 1,00,000 live births by 2030. Similarly, the infant mortality rate is 47 against per 1,000 children in the State. It is only 10 in Kerela. The Global SDG target aims to reduce the mortality rate to at least 25 per 1,000 live births by 2030," said Das.

Lastly, the APMC president underlined that while the total physicians, nurses and midwives per 10,000 population are only 23 in Assam, it is 115 in Kerela.
