GUWAHATI: The remnant of the cyclonic storm Sitrang which created a deep depression over Bangladesh, has further weakened into a depression over northeast Bangladesh, north-northeast of Agartala and south-southwest of Shillong, informed the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday.

On Monday, the IMD issued a red alert indicating heavy to very heavy and extremely heavy rainfall in Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram and Tripura. In Assam, several parts of the State were hit by heavy rains and gushing wind. In Guwahati, some infrastructural damages have occurred which have been taken cognizance of. Huge trees were uprooted at several locations. The District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) teams along with officials of district administration have taken necessary measures to take care of the damage caused by the cyclonic storm.

Due to heavy rainfall since Monday, several areas of the city were inundated. Areas like Hatigaon, Rukminigaon, Jatia, Fatasil Ambari, Panjabari and the Kali Mandir near Gandhibasti are grappling with the problem on artificial flooding.

In view of the effects of cyclonic storm Sitrang, the Kamrup (metro) district administration has started a helpline number. Citizens may reach out for assistance/ reporting of infrastructural damages etc. on the helpline number 9365429314.

The cyclonic storm Sitrang, pronounced as 'Si-Trang' over the northwest and adjoining the central Bay of Bengal crossed the Bangladesh coast between Tinkona and Sandwip close to Barisal during 9:30 pm to 11:30 pm on Monday with a maximum sustained wind speed of 80-90 kmph gusting to 100 kmph, IMD said.

"The cyclone is very likely to continue to move north-northeastwards and weaken into a depression during next 6 hours and further into a well-marked low-pressure area during subsequent 6 hours," it further said.
