Day 3 of Assam Assembly Proceedings Held at Under-Construction Building

The Speaker Hitendra Nath Goswami said that initially there might be temporary hiatus in conducting the session in the under-construction building.

GUWAHATI: On the last day the of the ongoing Assam assembly session, Speaker Hitendra Nath Goswami invited all the members of the present Assembly to take part in the proceedings in the new building.

The new building complex is located adjacent to the existing Assembly complex.

Earlier, MLAs from both ruling and Opposition parties, including Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Industry Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary and Speaker Hitendra Nath Goswami toured the building.

Talking to the official Twitter handle of Assam Chief Minister wrote, "CM Shri @sarbanandsonwal visited the new state-of-the-art new building of Assam Legislative Assembly in Guwahati and reviewed the progress of works."

The Rs 235-crore complex, which is coming up on a 10-acre plot, will have a total floor area of 3,61,000 sq ft and will be approachable from GS Road.

According to the Speaker, the construction work for the new complex will require additional funds to complete the pending works and the same shall be allocated in the next state budget.

The new Assembly complex comprises four buildings – the two-storied Assam Legislative Assembly Building, a fifteen storied Annexe I Building, a three-storied Annexe II Building and a one-storied Sub-Station Building which will accommodate transformers, diesel generator, AC plant, etc.

The building will be centrally air-conditioned and have seven lifts and an escalator.

The building will be surrounded by a water body and state-of-the-art lighting facility. It will also have a glass elevator.

The Annexe I building, with a height of 78 metres, is said to be the tallest building in the Northeast. Besides chambers for different committees of the Assembly, this building will house a cafeteria, chambers of ministers, press lounge, etc. It will be equipped with fire refusal floor with fireproof door for rescue, CCTV and modern fire detection and fire fighting arrangements.

The Annexe II building will be the secretariat building of the Assam Legislative Assembly. The complex will also have a ceremonial ground, service blocks, security office, main entry gate from GS Road, VVIP entry, service roads, driveway and pavement, drainage system for external water, sewerage, stormwater, landscaping, illumination with automatic energy-saving devices, sewage treatment plant, bio-toilets among other facilities.
