GUWAHATI: The suspected transgender person who was found dead in a drain near the Assam Engineering Institute (AEI) hostel on Saturday afternoon was identified by the Chandmari police on Sunday.
According to police sources, the deceased has been identified as Amdadul Islam, hailing from a place under Juria police station in Nagaon district. The body of Islam was found under suspicious circumstances and police suspected that he was killed somewhere else and the body dumped near AEI.
It has been established that Islam has been visiting Guwahati on a regular basis. The deceased used to hang out with a group of transgender individuals in Guwahati. Reports suggest that Islam was posing as a transgender person.
Meanwhile, the city police made some progress after thoroughly checking the CCTV footage collected from near the spot on Saturday. The footage from a nearby temple reportedly showed two persons bringing the dead person there and throwing the body into the drain, according to a source.
Investigation into the incident is continuing and more information is likely to be available soon.
