GUWAHATI: The Gauhati High Court Bar Association has opposed the decision to shift the High Court and other courts from Guwahati. An extraordinary general meeting was held on Monday regarding the shifting of the Gauhati High Court and some resolutions were adopted.
In a statement to the media, association president Mrinal Kumar Choudhury stated that a meeting was held on May 23 at the Chief Minister’s office on the issue of shifting the Gauhati High Court and other courts in Kamrup (M). The association expressed anguish over the decision to shift them from their present place to Rangmahal, North Guwahati in the Kamrup district.
In the general meeting, the president of the bar association was authorized to submit a memorandum highlighting the issues to the President of India, the Prime Minister, Governor of Assam, Union Law Minister, Chief Justice of India, Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court, Chief Minister of Assam, Union Minister of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, and Ayush, Sarbananda Sonowal.
The president of the bar association has been authorized to take up the issue with the All Assam Lawyers’ Association and other bar associations. The executive committee of the Bar Association has been authorized to constitute a committee meeting of the advocates of the High Court, including designated senior advocates, after discussion on the same and, if necessary, send delegations to the authorities concerned for discussion on the issue.
The executive committee has been authorized to chalk out the future course of action depending on the outcome.
