Dispur College observes World Poetry Day

 GUWAHATI: The Department of English, Dispur College in association with the Literary and Debate Sections of the Dispur College Students’ Union observed World Poetry Day 2023 in the college premises on Tuesday. Eminent Assamese poet, Deba Prasad Talukdar graced the occasion as the Guest of Honour, and in an enlightening speech, addressed the students stressing on “poetry is not a luxury, but a song sung in the service of humanity.” In keeping with the theme of this year’s World Poetry Day, “Always a Poet, Even in Prose,” Dr Navajyoti Borah, Principal of Dispur College also emphasized on how poetry influence human life.

As part of the ceremonies on the occasion, a Poem Recital Competition was organized amongst students of various departments of the college with the hope to provide them with a platform to showcase their creative side by reciting self-composed poems. Student participants also benefitted from the invaluable insights regarding the art of recitation offered by Dr Pranita Sarma, Head of the Dept. of Philosophy and Ajit Prasad Sarma, Assistant Professor, Dept. of Assamese, Dispur College.

The programme was convened by Dr Sanjeev Sarma, Head of the Dept. of English. Faculties of the department Dr Binoy Chetia, Smriti Deori, Sutibra Malakar. Swarnali Kalita, Smriti Deori and Sutibra Malakar serving as the faculties-in-charge of the Literary and Debate Sections of DCSU respectively, extended their full support and co-operation in its smooth conduct. The event was anchored by Tanisa Taskin, a sixth-semester student of the Department of English at Dispur College.
