GUWAHATI: The local artisans (potters making earthen lamps and other Dewali items) have suffered a setback in the Diwali market in Guwahati, with Chinese items and online Diwali varieties engulfing the market. The flyover under construction at Maligaon also has cascading effects on the potters who have been doing business near the Kamakhya Gate.

Talking to The Sentinel, one of the vendors of earthen lamps, said, "The online markets beat us in designing as well as on the price line. They can sell their products at cheaper rates as they use machines to make their products. Our traditional pottery is on the verge of extinction in the face of ruthless competition from the Chinese and online markets. Mustard oil is a must for the earthen lamps we make. However, they have electrical varieties."
