GUWAHATI: Guwahati is illuminated with multi-coloured string lights, diyas, and rangoli in celebration of the Festival of Lights. As people surge up the streets to buy crackers and other essentials, the demand for banana trees has also increased to a huge number. And during Diwali, the banana tree sellers do a brisk business. The demand for the banana tree increases with Diwali as the residents of the city are in need of the trees due to their unavailability.
People gathered to buy banana trees at Jalukbari, Maligaon, Paltan Bazar, Ganeshguri, Bamunimaidam, and others where footpaths are filled with lots of buyers and sellers. These saplings or trees are brought from Hajo, Rangia, Kamalpur, Baihata Chariali, Boko and others. As compared to last Diwali, the demand for banana trees has increased with time.
According to one seller, “Almost 100 sellers have gathered at Fancy Bazar to sell banana tresses and saplings since Saturday, and from Fancy Bazar itself approximately 12,000 trees are sold in Fancy Bazar. We can see a huge surge of customers since morning. But as compared to last year, this time the business is quite low. Customers are in great numbers, so the supply of trees is also in large numbers.”
Another seller said, “Earlier, the sellers used to cut from their own fields and sell in the market, but in recent times, the sellers have to buy and sell, which eventually leads to a price hike for the saplings. We are selling each sapling for Rs 100 to Rs 300.”
