Drugs are smuggled to Assam from Golden Triangle: CM Himanta Biswa Sarma

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday stated that during police investigation it has been revealed that the illicit drugs are smuggled to Assam from the ‘Golden Triangle’ which comprises parts of Myanmar, Laos, and Thailand.

GUWAHATI: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday stated that during police investigation it has been revealed that the illicit drugs are smuggled to Assam from the 'Golden Triangle' which comprises parts of Myanmar, Laos, and Thailand.

He was replying to a written (un-starred) question by AGP (Asom Gana Parishad) MLA Phani Bhushan Choudhury in the Assembly House.

In his reply, the CM underlined that the drug contrabands seized in the State are smuggled from neighbouring States.

"Drugs like heroin and brown sugar are produced in the Golden Triangle and are smuggled to Assam from Myanmar through the Manipur-Mizoram border. From Assam, the drugs are transported to other States of the country," said Sarma.

Further, he pointed out that in some areas of Manipur, Tripura and Arunachal Pradesh, ganja is cultivated from where consignments are smuggled to Assam and other States. Replying to another written question by BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) MLA Sumon Haripriya, the CM said that from May 10 to June 30, a total of 729 drug cases have been registered in Assam.

"During this period, as many as 1,262 persons have been arrested. The seizures include - 16.734 kg heroin, 6876.424 kg ganja, 10.28027 kg opium, 58,582 cough syrup bottles, 9,56,080 tablets, 3,314 kg poppy straw, 3 kg crystal meth, and 1.929 kg morphine. Moreover, Rs 84,15,270 cash has been recovered from the arrested persons and 31 bighas, 3 katha, 12 lessa of cannabis cultivation has been destroyed," the CM added.
