GUWAHATI: In its drive to augment collection of motor vehicle tax under various heads, the District Transport department is turning the searchlight upon the numerous school buses operating in the city. According to Gautam Das, District Transport Officer (DTO), Guwahati (M), there are more than 1,100 school buses in the city and only 500 or so of them have up-to-date motor vehicle tax clearance. The others are operating without having renewed necessary documents and paid due taxes, and many errant owners of such school buses have already been fined, he said. The DTO further said keeping the students' convenience in view, a concerted drive has not been launched against school buses at large. However, he said that no such consideration will be shown to any defaulting school bus after March 15.
