GUWAHATI: The price of egg has been up in Assam since July 1, 2020. Now it is sold at Rs 12-14 a pair.
When contacted, the owner of Sriram Egg Agency at Hatigaon Prithvi Nath Verma said, "On July 22, 2020 the cost of a plate of eggs (30) was Rs 130 which costs Rs 160 now. It was Rs 165 two days back. On July 22 the price per carton of egg (seven plates) was Rs 880 which now costs Rs 1,100."
Per pair of eggs should cost Rs 12 but in interior area is it sold at Rs 13 or 14 per pair.
"We can't fix the price of eggs. We buy eggs from Andhra Pradesh and Haryana. While egg price is fixed in Andhra Pradesh by the NECC (National Egg Coordination Committee), it is fixed by BETA (Barwala Egg Traders' Association) in Haryana. In Assam there's no fixed rate of eggs. We just add our profit along with the price fixed by the agencies. Around ten trucks carry eggs to Guwahati everyday. Each truck carries 1,200-1,300 cartons of eggs. There's no possibility of fall in egg price given the present price line in the country."
During the lockdown in April-May, eggs were sold in Guwahati at Rs 16 per pair. There had been scarcity of the commodity. With the availability of the commodity now, its price has been reduced to Rs 12 per pair.
