GUWAHATI: Several parts of the city were beautifully decorated ahead of the Durga Puja, but several parts remain without proper lighting. Some other locations see the lights on even through the day, and the authorities have blamed the theft of electrical equipment as the main cause of the lack of lighting in some places and the inability to switch off lights in some other places.

These incidents first came to light after several of the decorative lights on the new Nilachal Flyover were stolen within a few days. The same continued in several other locations, where sensors, wires, switches, MCBs, and other materials were reportedly stolen by miscreants, resulting in these issues. It remains to be seen what actions will be taken by the authorities to curb such actions in order to prevent public properties from being vandalised and public funds from being wasted.

A local person from Maligaon said, "On one hand, we have to pay so much in the name of electricity bills, but these street lights and decorative lights stay on even through the day. The authorities should take proper steps to prevent such actions that lead to the loss of public money.

Meanwhile, an official from the concerned authorities mentioned, "We are trying our level best to maintain the city in a properly lit condition at night, but miscreants continue to steal equipment, causing disruptions in the services."
