Guwahati: Assam Education Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced the reopening of elementary schools in the state from January 1, 2021. The decision was taken after holding various discussions with the Prathamik Sikshak Sanmilani (Primary teachers association).
However, the fresh guidelines regarding the classes will be notified later.
The schools were closed following the nationwide lockdown due to the coronavirus outbreak.
Sarma announced the same while addressing a press meet at Janata Bhawan, Guwahati.
He also said that the college hostels will reopen from December 15 with a set of limitations. The final year students will be allowed to come back to their hostels.
Sarma said that instructions have been issued to the college principals and administration for the cleaning of the hostels, which were closed during the pandemic.
Assam Health Minister Sarma also said that Assam has registered a total of 2,12,617 COVID-19 cases. Out of 2,12,617 cases, 2,08,283 recovered from the deadly disease. Sarma further said that the COVID-19 situation in Assam is currently "under control". The temporary COVID care centres have been closed as the situation in the state is better now.
He also said that from now onwards, the COVID positive patients will only be treated in the hospitals.
