Eminent economist Dr. Jayanta Madhab passes away at 91

He has served as the economic advisor (2003-2009) to the Government of Assam during the tenure of former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi.

Guwahati: A renowned economist, Dr. Jayanta Madhab passed away at the age of 91. Dr Madhab had heart ailments and was suffering from diabetes. He was first admitted to GNRC Hospital on October 5. Later, he was admitted to Apollo Hospital on October 17, where he took his last breath on Monday midnight.

A noted scholar, Dr. Madhab graduated in economics from JB College, Jorhat and pursued his masters from Gauhati University. He earned his doctorate degree in financial management from the London School of Economics.

Served as the economic advisor (2003-2009) to the Government of Assam during the tenure of former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi. He was also the founder chairman of NEDFi – North Eastern Development Finance Corporation Ltd (NEDFi). He played a very crucial role in the field of skill development in the state.

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal condoles the demise of Dr. Madhab on Twitter. He calls it a great loss for the nation.
