GUWAHATI: The election authority of the Kamrup (M) district on Saturday commissioned the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) that will be used for the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) election on April 22.

The commissioning was done in a scientific way as per norms at the Maniram Dewan Trade Centre at Betkuchi here. First, the EVMs are examined thoroughly and pairing is done. Then the machines are formatted and all old data is deleted. Finally, new ballot paper is inserted and trial voting is done in the presence of representatives of various parties and candidates to check whether the EVMs are functioning properly. If an EVM is found to be functioning normally, then that machine is formatted once again to delete unwanted data, sealed and packed in the strong rooms for use on the day of election.

The commissioning was done under supervision of Kamrup (M) Election Office and Deputy Commissioner Pallav Kumar Jha in the presence of Assistant Returning Officers, representatives of various parties and candidates.

A total of six strong rooms are being used for the GMC election. EVMs that are to be used in 89 polling stations for election to GMC Wards No 1 to 10 will stored in the first strong room. EVMs that are to be used in 131 polling stations for election to GMC Wards No 11 to 20 will stored in the second strong room. EVMs that are to be used in 113 polling stations for election to GMC Wards No 21 to 30 will stored in the third strong room. EVMs that are to be used in 130 polling stations for election to GMC Wards No 31 to 40 will stored in the fourth strong room. EVMs that are to be used in 139 polling stations for election to GMC Wards No 41 to 50 will stored in the fifth strong room and EVMs that are to be used in 155 polling stations for election to GMC Wards No 51 to 60 will stored in the sixth strong room.

Polling will be held in 757 centres on April 22 and counting of votes will take place on April 24.
