Guwahati: With the number of Covid-19 cases in Assam continuing to tick upwards at a dramatic rate, the state's health department has begun construction of 4 more 1,000-bedded quarantine centre facilities to house returnees.
The Sentinel Digital visited one of these upcoming quarantine centres which will house at least 1,000 inmates once it is fully functional. In keeping with the standards adhered to by the Assam Government in constructing quarantine centers in Guwahati, where a bulk of the returnees touch down, this new quarantine center too, has been constructed for the comfort of the inmates who will be kept there. A walk through the hanger revealed clean, airy, and spacious interiors. The rooms appear to be large and the beds are comfy. Bathrooms, a matter of concern among inmates, are fairly large and seem to be having all modern amenities.
At first glance, a walk through this quarantine centre would reveal cleanliness and hygiene – two things of utmost importance for incoming persons, some of whom can be sick. We were also informed that doctors would soon also be stationed at the centre to closely monitor the health condition of the inmates and to administer help in case someone falls sick.
"We began construction18 days ago and the work is being carried forward efficient. We will have 6 hangers with over 150 rooms, and in total, we will have 1,050 rooms for quarantine. Soon after the work is complete, doctors will come in as the Government will take over. We have provided fresh bedsheets, pillow covers, etc for that the inmates can live comfortably. When people start coming in, we will arrange soaps, toothbrushes, shampoo, towels, and other things so that nobody faces any inconvenience. We also have a quarantine kitchen where delicious food will be cooked", said Pradip Bharali, one of the supervisors of the construction of the ambitious project.
He further added that the construction is likely to be completed within the month. "We had expected to complete the work by June 25, but since the weather is unpredictable now, the job has been hampered. However, we will try to ensure that it is completed within 5 days", he added.
