TEACHER RECRUITMENT BLUES

STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI: Hundreds of candidates staged protest in front of the Directorate of Primary Education, Kahilipara here on Wednesday as they didn't get the opportunity to apply for vacant posts for teachers at lower primary and upper primary schools despite being eligible.

Talking to The Sentinel, Ranjan Saikia, one of the candidates, said, "We are regular students of Diploma in Elementary Education (D.El.Ed.) under SCERT (State Council of Educational Research and Training) for the year 2018-19. Directorate of Primary Education published an advertisement for the permanent posts for teachers in lower primary and upper primary schools on September 11. The number of vacant posts according to the published advertisement was 5,043. The advertisement appealed to the eligible candidates to register online before September 26. But due to the COVID-19 situation SCERT results for D.El.Ed. were not declared. However, students of Dibrugarh University, Assam University and Tezpur University were able to apply because their Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) results were declared. But, Gauhati University and Bodoland University candidates were not able to apply due to non declaration of B.Ed results."

Saikia said there are around 450 students under SCERT and overall 700 students if Gauhati University and Bodoland University are included who also couldn't apply for the posts.

"The SCERT results were declared on October 9. Recently, on October 22, the Directorate of Elementary Education published another advertisement. The number of vacant posts has been increased to 9,882. But the advertisement stated that only the candidates who did online registration before September 26 are eligible to select the districts from which they would like to apply for the posts," said Saikia.

He added that as the ad has been newly published and the SCERT results have also been declared, the online portal should be opened for these new candidates to apply.

The protesters submitted a memorandum to Education Minister through the Directorate of the Primary Education demanding the reopening of the portal to accept registration for new candidates.
