GUWAHATI: The All Assam Scheduled Caste Students' Union has demanded strict action against people who use fake caste certificates to get jobs and admission in educational institutions.

Addressing a press meet in the city on Tuesday, the students' union general secretary, Debakumar Das said, "There are 3 lakh people working in various government departments in Assam and studying in various educational institutions using fake caste certificates. These people are depriving the genuine SC people. The government must take strict action against such people who use fake caste certificates."

He further said that the union was opposed to issuing caste certificates under Mission Bhumiputra Assam. Mission Bhumiputra is a mission-based scheme to provide caste certificates to ST, SC, OBC and MOBC applicants in a simplified manner. Under Mission Bhumiputra, eligible students of Classes IX, X, XI and XII will get their caste certificates in their schools itself.

Das said, "The government must ensure protection of the constitutional rights of the indigenous SC people of the State."
