Fake currency notes seized: Three, including former GNLA member, arrested in Guwahati

GUWAHATI: A special squad and East Guwahati Police District (EGPD) team from Basistha PS, with the help of Crime Branch, Guwahati, on Tuesday recovered fake Indian currency notes from a vehicle and arrested three persons in this connection.

Acting on a tip-off, a Bolero vehicle bearing registration number ML O7 B 7998 was intercepted at the Sonapur toll gate and was brought to the Baisistha PS. A thorough search was conducted in the vehicle and during the search, a bundle of fake currency notes was recovered. In this bundle, notes amounting to Rs 10,000 were original while the rest of the notes were only white paper.

Police arrested three persons in this connection. They have been identified as Champion R Sangma (46), son of Bidhan Marak of Songsak PS at Songsak East Garo hills, Meghalaya; Gohanch Sangma (36), son of Thawaram of Songsak PS at Songsak East Garo hills; and Cherian Momin (28), son of Daiman Ch Marak of Tura Walbakgie PS at Arimail, West Garo Hills. Champion R Sangma was the receiver of the notes.

According to him, he had paid Rs 3,50,000 to Poresh and Bijay Das at Kampur petrol pump and the persons who delivered the bundle to him told him that the bundle contained fake currency notes amounting to Rs 15,00,000. Champion R Sangma is a former Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) member. A case has been registered at Basistha PS case no. 243/22. Further investigation is on.
