FICN smuggling rampant; 2 more arrested by Assam Police

Smuggling of fake Indian currency notes (FICN) is rampant due to which Assam Police has intensified operation against FICN.

GUWAHATI: Smuggling of fake Indian currency notes (FICN) is rampant due to which Assam Police has intensified operation against FICN.

On Monday, the Special Operation Group (SOG) of the West Guwahati Police District (WGPD) acted on an intel and arrested two persons – Md Saddam Hussain of Beharbari and Md Mahmood Hasan of Gossaigaon – in the Nursery area of Guwahati near the Kamakhya gate and recovered three bundles of FICN (290 notes) of Rs 500 denomination. Two mobile handsets were also seized.

These arrests come close on the heels of the arrest of two persons involved in FICN smuggling. An operation was conducted on July 5 in Guwahati by a team of STF (Special Task Force), Assam where a person named Md. Sahanoor Islam (28), involved in illegal activities relating to FICN, was apprehended near the ISBT bypass, Guwahati. After spot interrogation, search operation was conducted in the house of the accused at Ahom Gaon, Guwahati from where bundles of photostated Indian currency notes of Rs 500 denomination and bundles of blank white paper were recovered. On the basis of Md. Sahanoor Islam’s confession, on July 9, Md. Bulbul Alam (31) was apprehended by a team of STF from a rented house at Dakhingaon in Guwahati. Based on information received from Alam, another person named Sofiqul Islam was arrested on the night of July 9. According to sources, a Xerox machine was seized from his house. Md. Sahanoor Islam had allegedly used this Xerox machine to photostat Indian currency notes.
