Threats against Himanta Biswa Sarma and his family: Former army man arrested

Guwahati: Tirtha Chaliha, a former military man residing in the Satgaon area of Guwahati city, has been arrested by Police after posting extremely derogatory remarks and threats against Assam minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and his family on Facebook.

The former military man in a series of posts has made extremely derogatory comments about the Assam minister. He has also made obscene remarks against the minister's wife, Riniki Bhuyan Sarma. In one particularly shocking post, he has even threatened to kill Sarma's son and daughter. He has also posted disdainful remarks about the Minister's treatment of the COVID-19 situation in the state.

Chaliha landed in the proverbial soup after these posts were brought to the notice of the police. It is as of yet unclear what prompted Chaliha to post such obscene remarks against the minister and his kin. He was picked up from his residence by police earlier today and an investigation has been launched into the matter.

"We have registered a case in this regard, which is case no. 12/20. We have apprehended Tirtha Chaliha and further investigation is on. He has been arrested because of his Facebook posts and incriminating details The man stays in Udayan Vihar in Guwahati, and originally he hails from Amguri in Lakhimpur district. We are interrogating him and more details will come to the fore shortly", informed Munna Prasad Gupta, the Police Commissioner of Guwahati.
