Former Gauhati High Court judge Arun Chandra Upadhyay passes away at 69

The death of the former Gauhati High Court judge has been condoled by several local bodies

Guwahati: Justice Arun Chandra Upadhyay, a former Judge of the Gauhati High Court, passed away on Monday morning around 3.30 am at a private hospital in Guwahati at 69. He is survived by his wife and two daughters and a host of relatives.

Late Justice Arun Chandra Upadhyay was born in the year 1951 at Mazgoan, Behali in Sonitpur district of Assam to Tanka Nath Upadhyay, the eldest son of freedom fighter and founder president of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) Shri Chabilal Upadhyay.

He completed B.Sc from Darrang College, Tezpur, and did his LLB from Guwahati. Justice Upadhyay (69) joined the Bar in 1976 and became Munschief in Tinsukia in 1981. He practiced mainly in the Gauhati High Court and the district courts in Kamrup.

He also held the post of Secretary, Judicial Department of the Assam government and Additional Judge of the Gauhati High Court in December, 2008 and on 29th November 2011 he was appointed permanent Judge of Gauhati High Court and retired in 2012. He was associated with Bharatiya Gorkha Parisangh as its well wisher after his retirement.

Mourning his death Bharatiya Gorkha Yuva Parisangha (BhaGoYuP) president Nanda Kirati Dewan said, "Today we lost an elder who served judiciary and contributed to the community and society. It's an irreparable loss to the legal and judicial fraternity of Assam. May the departed soul rest in peace."

He further added, 'Justice Upadhyay was a fountainhead of knowledge and always a source of inspiration for legal and judicial fraternity within the community.

Assam State Bharatiya Gorkha Parisangha (BGP)condoled president Prakash Dahal and gen secy Bimal Pradhan in a joint statement condoled the death of Justice Upadhyay and said that the Gorkha community lost a flag bearer son of soil today.
