GUWAHATI: Former Principal of Handique Girls’ College and social activist Shenehi Begum passed away at her Ambari residence here at 5.45 am on Saturday. She was 77 and ailing for sometime. Begum started her professional career as a lecturer of History in Handique Girls’ College in 1963. She later translated Sir Edward Gait’s ‘History of Assam’ into Assamese. She was supervising officer in various examinations conducted by the SEBA, AHSEC and Gauhati University. Besides brilliant academic career, Begum was actively associated with National Cadet Corps (NCC) and promoted to the rank of Major. She was also a newsreader in All India Radio (1975-1980). Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has deeply condoled the death of Shenehi Begum and said the State has lost a brilliant & honest woman academician. Her Janaza was performed at Sarania Kabarasthan in Islampur on Saturday evening.
