GUWAHATI: Senior Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) leader and former MLA Binod Gowala passed away at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) on Wednesday.
Four-time MLA Binod Gowala represented the Sarupathar constituency. He served as MLA in the years 1978, 1991, 1996 and 2008. He also served as the Minister for Border Development at the time when the State Government was led by Prafulla Kumar Mahanta. He played a major role in the victory and success of the Asom Gana Parishad across the State and gained much recognition serving the 94-Sarupathar constituency.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma condoled the demise of Binod Gowala. In a statement, the Chief Minister said that Gowala, who was a prominent leader of the Assam agitation and a former MLA of Sarupathar LAC, made immense contribution to the socio-political life of Assam. Sarma said that Gowala was committed to the cause of public welfare and worked unrelentingly for the development of the state and termed his death as an irreparable loss to the society. The Chief Minister offered his deep condolence to the bereaved family and prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul.
Industries and Commerce Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary also condoled the demise of former MLA Binod Gowala. In a condolence statement, the minister said, "Binod Gowala was a leader of the masses who worked relentlessly for the development of the constituency. He will fondly remembered by his friends and followers. His demise is an irreparable loss."
The minister also extended his condolences to members of the bereaved family and prayed to the Almighty for eternal peace of the departed soul.
