GUWAHATI: The Councillors of the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) are active in the city to execute Mission Flood Free before the arrival of the monsoon season. The GMC has as much as 60 wards, and GMC is planning in each ward to accelerate the works of road construction and drain cleaning so that the city doesn't experience the problems of water logging like before.

The GMC has announced a total of Rs 600 cr for executing Mission Flood Free in the two consecutive years of 2023 and 2024. But the Councillors have not received the complete funds to continue the works.

One Councillor expressed his concern , "GMC should have released the funds in time because it is never possible to execute Mission Flood Free without having proper funds. Release of the funds will help us in accomplishing the project."

He further said, "The bylanes are connected to the main roads, and hence, the construction of the bylanes is much necessary to avoid water logging problems. Unless the bylanes are repaired or constructed, the city will experience floods. The GMC tenders are also funded by the centre, but the funding also got cancelled due to a lapse in the tenders."
