Gauhati High Court Gets Rashmin Manharbhai Chhaya As Its New Chief Justice

Dignitaries like Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Assembly speaker Biswajit Daimary, along with Judges and advocate general were present at the swearing-in ceremony.

Guwahati: Justice Rashmin Manharbhai Chhaya on Thursday sworn in as the new Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court.

The oath was administered by the Assam Governor Jagdish Mukhi.

Justice Chhaya who replaced Justice Kotiswar Singh has formerly served as a Judge in the Gujarat High Court.

Chhaya was born in Veraval, Gujarat, and pursued his B Com from MS University, Vadodara in 1981. Later in 1984, he obtained LLB Degree from Sir LA Shah College from Gujarat University.

Dignitaries like Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Assembly speaker Biswajit Daimary, along with Judges and advocate general were present at the swearing-in ceremony.

After the swearing-in ceremony, Sarma took to the micro-blogging site Twitter and said, ''On behalf of the people of Assam, I convey my best wishes to Hon'ble Justice Chhaya on taking over as the new Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court. A legal luminary with years of experience, I am confident his assuming the office will definitely aid our justice delivery system."

On June 19, the central government notified the appointments of new chief justices in six high courts of the country after recommendations were made by the Supreme Court's collegium.

"In exercise of the power conferred by clause (1) of Articles 217 and 222 of the Constitution of India, the President of India, after consultation with the Hon'b1e Chief Justice of India, is pleased to appoint Rashmin Manharbhai Chhaya, Judge, Gujarat High Court as the Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court", Ministry of Law and Justice said in a notification dated June 19, 2022.

After the government's approval, apart from Chhaya, a total of 5 other judges were also appointed as Chief Justices of High Courts in the country.

Delhi High Court's acting chief justice Vipin Sanghi was appointed as the Chief Justice of Uttrakhand High Court, while Satish Chandra Sharma, Chief Justice of Telangana High Court, was appointed as Delhi High Court's regular chief.

On the other hand, two judges of Bombay High Court, Justices Amjad Ahtesham and Sambhaji Shivaji Shinde were appointed as the Chief Justices Himachal Pradesh and Rajasthan High Court.

Justice, Ujjal Bhuyan of Telangana High Court was elevated as the Chief Justice of the same court.
