GUWAHATI: Bharalu is a major tributary of the Brahmaputra River that has been severely damaged and polluted as a result of the city's discarded waste. This is producing major pollution in Guwahati, putting the society's health and hygiene in danger.

During the monsoon season, Bhralu deteriorates due to a lack of sufficient facilities and due to drainage water, and garbage has caused the river, turned into a drain, to deteriorate significantly.

The Gauhati High Court gave notice to the Assam government on Thursday, ordering it to answer to the Suo Motu PIL by May 18. According to reports, the PIL was submitted by an ex-student of Guwahati's Sonaram Higher Secondary School, which is located close to the Bharalu River.

Das further claimed that none of the civic agencies tasked with protecting the health and hygiene of Guwahati's city dwellers had bothered to implement effective interventional measures on the river's severe pollution.

Assam has terrible floods every year during the monsoon season. Meanwhile, due to a lack of a sufficient drainage system, Guwahati becomes clogged during heavy rains, and the only river that passes through Guwahati and transports surplus rainwater to the Brahmaputra has been converted to a garbage dump by inhabitants.

According to a study carried out by the Assam Pollution Control Board (APCB) in 2010, Bharalu and Bahini pass through the most populated areas of Guwahati.

In 2019, according to data revealed by Prakash Javadkar, Minister of Environment, Forest & Climate Change stated that 16 rivers in Assam were listed in the most polluted rivers in the country. Some of the most polluted rivers are Bharalu,Beki, kapili etc.

According to another report, the Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD) of the Bharalu River grew from 18 to 38 in 2019. Coliform bacteria, which cause sickness, were also discovered, according to sources.

A CPCB report in 2008 identified Bharalu as one of India's 71 most contaminated rivers.
