GUWAHATI: The Gauhati High Court (GHC) has asked the Assam State government to provide information on the women inmates with infants who have been recommended to be released by the High Powered Committee in view of the second wave of COVID pandemic.

Hearing a PIL (Suo Moto) 4/2020, R. Dhar senior Government Advocate representing the state of Assam submitted before the Court that out of the 24 women inmates who are having infants, 7 have been recommended for release by the High Powered Committee.

Further, the Gauhati High Court has asked the State government on the status of the 7 inmates who have been recommended for release by the High Powered Committee or not by June 1.

The court order states, "Mr. Dhar shall inform us on 01.06.2021 whether these 7 women have been released from jail in compliance of the decision of the High Powered Committee or not."

Under the earlier order dated 11.05.2021, a list of female jail inmates has been placed before the Court which gives details of such female jail inmates who are either under trials or have been convicted and lodged in different jails in Assam and are having small children with them. The list contains the names of these inmates.
