Gauhati High Court to celebrate Platinum Jubilee on April 5

 GUWAHATI: The Gauhati High Court will celebrate its Platinum Jubilee on April 5, on completion of 75th year of existence. On September 9, 1947, the Assam Legislative Assembly had adopted a resolution to the effect that a High Court be established for the Province of Assam. On March 1, 1948, the Governor General of India promulgated the Assam High Court Order, 1948, under the provisions of the Government of India Act, 1935, establishing the High Court of Assam with effect from 5th April, 1948, at Shillong. Sir R.F. Lodge was sworn in as the first Chief Justice of Assam High Court on April 5, 1948.

The High Court of Assam had shifted to the Old Commissioner’s Building at Gauhati on 14th August, 1948 which was an Assam type building situated opposite the Curzon Hall facing Dighali Pukhuri in the East. It was subsequently shifted to the iconic dome structured building (now the Old Block of the Gauhati High Court) on February 20, 1957, and then to its present location (now the New Block of the Gauhati High Court) adjacent to the mighty Brahmaputra river, on December 16, 2013, a press release stated.

On April 4, a bicycle rally will be organized after being flagged off by the Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court. Thereafter, an inaugural session on “Sensitization Programme on application of Information & Communication Technology (ICT) in Indian Judiciary” will be held.

On April 5, a felicitation ceremony of the Senior Advocates and Retired Judicial Officers, Registry and Pleaders Clerks will be held followed by a programme wherein there will be release of the Assamese version of the book “Gauhati High Court::History & Heritage” by the Chief Minister of Assam and release of Commemorative Stamp of the Gauhati High Court by The Union Minister of Law & Justice, release of ATMAN Magazine (Platinum Jubilee Edition) by the Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court.

On April 6, six books on customary laws will be released, on Rabha, Tiwa, Zeme-Naga and Bodos of Assam, Nyshis of Arunachal Pradesh and Halams of Tripura published by the Law Research Institute.

On April 7, there will be launch of mobile application “Bhoroxa” made for the safety of Women by the President of India.
