GUWAHATI: Gauhati University celebrated World Zoonoses Day on Tuesday. As a part of the programme, a webinar was organized by GU NSS Cell in association with Humane Society International, India.

Inaugurating the webinar Professor Sweta Saran, Dean & Professor, School of Life Sciences, JNU, New Delhi said that zoonoses are infectious diseases caused by a pathogen that has jumped from an animal to a human-like the present coronavirus disease. Professor Saran said that since no particular medicine and therapy are available when a new zoonotic disease spreads, prevention and awareness are the best way to stop it from spreading. Attending the webinar as Chief Guest, Professor Birinchi Kr. Das, V.C., Bhattadev University said that the way society interacts with animals has serious implications for global human health. Professor Das urged all to take precautions while interacting with animals and observe what we eat to avoid zoonotic diseases.

The webinar was moderated by Dr Sumadhur Roy, NSS PO, Gauhati Commerce College. About 250 participants from across the country comprising faculties, NGO executives, NSS volunteers and Programme Officers attended the webinar.
