Gauhati University holds 30th Convocation on Friday

GUWAHATI: Gauhati University hosted its 30th convocation on Friday. Gulab Chand Kataria, Governor of Assam and Chancellor of Gauhati University, while unable to attend the ceremony due to unavoidable circumstances, in his written speech warmly congratulated all degree holders. He urged the young graduates to play their roles in strengthening the nation with new thoughts and knowledge, to meet emerging challenges and capitalize on opportunities, to find solutions and work resolutely towards eradicating ills plaguing the country like poverty, various inequalities, damage to the environment, etc.

The convocation was presided over by the Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Pratap Jyoti Handique. While congratulating the graduates, the Vice Chancellor said that Gauhati University attentively maintains its teaching, learning, research, and extension activities in a diverse social environment. He mentioned the recent NIRF-India rankings 2022, in which Gauhati University has been placed at 36th position among all the universities in the country, which is also the top spot above all universities in Northeast India. To implement the New National Education Policy 2020, the university has already prepared a detailed guideline for both the university and affiliated colleges. "It is expected that most of the interconnected problems faced by the Indian higher education system, like the production of graduates who are mostly unemployable, inflexible academic research, lack of entrepreneurship and life-skill education, financial crisis, poor infrastructure, and others, can be solved through the implementation of NEP 2020," he said.

Professor Jatinder Kumar Bajaj, Padma Shri Awardee and Chairman, Indian Council of Social Science Research, attended the convocation as the chief guest and delivered the convocation address. In his address, Dr. Bajaj reminded the gathering that the nation has adopted five resolutions for "Amrita Kala. These include achieving a "developed India," erasing all traces of servitude, taking pride in our legacy, inculcating a sense of oneness of the Indian land and people, building "Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat," and fulfilling the duties of citizenship. He wished that the youth who are graduating, would fulfil the duty of being the carriers of the great Indian civilization and help a glorious, self-confident, proud, and developed India take shape by 2047, the year in which the nation would have completed a hundred years of attaining freedom. The Registrar of Gauhati University, Dr. Hemanta Kumar Nath, welcomed the dignitaries and students attending the convocation ceremony.

The 30th convocation of Gauhati University awarded degrees and diplomas to over 52,253 undergraduate students, 3150 post-graduate students, 57 Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) students, and 166 Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) students. Out of this huge number of graduating students, 3277 have participated in this convocation physically. Accomplished environmentalist Professor Dulal Chandra Goswami was awarded the degree of Doctor of Science, honoris causa, Eminent Social Development Activist and Feminist Dr Monisha Behal, and Distinguished Dimasa litterateur Biswajyoti Barman, were awarded the degree of Doctor of Philosophy, honoris causa, in this convocation, stated a press release.
