GUWAHATI: The all-India general strike was near total in Assam, including Guwahati on Wednesday. Called by ten trade unions, it was supported by various State transport associations as chakka bandh in Assam, besides the ACMS (Assam Chah Mazdoor Sangha) calling bandh in all tea garden areas in the State.

Some of the trade unions that called the general strike are CITU, HMS, AITUC and All India Bank Officers’ Association. In Assam schools and colleges were closed. Even as the government offices were open in the State, banks and other financial associations and private offices were closed.

While buses and other passenger-carrying vehicles were off the road in Guwahati and elsewhere in the State, a few private vehicles were seen plying. Fifty-nine agitators – 39 in Pan Bazar Police Station and 19 in Paltanbazar Police station – were held during the bandh period, but released later.
