GUWAHATI: The State government and the Chief Minister of Assam have been urged to provide Rs 10 lakh gratuity to each of the retired teachers and employees of the provincialised schools. This appeal has been made by the planning committee of the 'Assam High School Retired Teachers & Employees Association (newly provincialised), Assam' at its policy-making meeting at the premises of the Beltola High School here on Thursday.

Talking to The Sentinel, the Association GS (general secretary), Nripendra Nath Sarma said, "On February 5, 2021, the then State Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had declared the above proposal at Sarusajai here during a function organized for the distribution of appointment letters to teachers. The Minister even assured us that the assured gratuity of Rs 10 lakh to even those government employees who might have retired after just 10 days of service in the respective sector."

Sarma enumerated, "Our schools were provincialised in 2013. However, there are many instances of teachers and employees who went on superannuation after working for just one month after provincialisation. Moreover, many of our retired colleagues breathed their last during that period. Hence, the government must provide us with the assured gratuity.

The Association leader added, "We further request the State government not to include the schools provincialized in 2013 in the proposed dissolution and amalgamation process of High Schools and High Madrassas in the State as per NEP (New Education Policy), 2020.

The Association will further discuss various issues of its members at its coordination meeting in Guwahati on September 26.
