GUWAHATI: The Guwahati Municipal Corporation hopes to replicate the success which Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has achieved in waste disposal with the help of Super Sucker trucks.
Two months ago, a team comprising GMC Commissioner Devashish Sharma, GMC Commissioner, and Guwahati Development Department (GDD) minister Ashok Singhal had recently gone to Ahmedabad in Gujarat to study the waste collection and disposal system implemented by AMC. The AMC has attained notable success in reducing plastic waste in the city. The GMC seeks to implement some measures taken by AMC to address the problem of artificial flooding and waste disposal in Guwahati.
Accordingly, a tender was floated by GMC to deliver Super Sucker trucks. The truck has one machine unit and two container set units that can store drain silt after collection. The truck also has a high storage capacity. This Super Sucker truck is an alternative to the traditional method of silt collection. Two Super Sucker trucks have been delivered and 7-8 more are expected to be delivered soon at a tender cost of around Rs 26 crore.
A GMC official said that within a month, specialized workers will come to train the local workers on how to use the Super Sucker trucks. "Once our workers learn how to use the machines, these trucks will be put into use in the city. The first trial run has been conducted." The official added, "The Super Sucker trucks will help in clearing the drains of the city. In Ahmedabad, these trucks have been successfully used to reduce plastic waste and to keep the city clean. We are hopeful to achieve similar success here to address the problem of artificial flooding and to keep the city clean."
