GMC initiates crackdown on eateries in Guwahati city

GUWAHATI: The GMC has initiated a strict crackdown on the sweet shops and other food businesses which do not follow the regulations related to food safety and hygiene on the premises, especially in the cooking area. As a part of this crackdown, the organisation has imposed severe penalties on several businesses in the city in the last few days for several reasons including a lack of proper trade licenses, lack of hygiene, etc.

Some of the organisations which have faced disciplinary actions include Kiran Mistan Bhandar in Chandmari - a fine of Rs 1.5 lakhs, Bharatiya Mistan Bhandar- fine of Rs 80000, Anand Mistan Bhandar- fine of Rs 50000, Madhumilan Sweets - fine of Rs 1.5 lakhs and AT Road Bakery - fine of Rs 25000. Several restaurants have also been fined for similar reasons.

The officials mentioned that the action has been initiated to ensure that three is no risk to the health of the citizens. They also mentioned that from now onwards, regular checks will be conducted to check for any violations including cleanliness and hygiene. They also added that even the major hotels and restaurants of the city will be checked in the future by the authorities to ensure that these businesses follow the regulations as well.
