GUWAHATI: A meeting was convened by the Commissioner, Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC), Devashish Sharma, in presence of the MLA of Guwahati West Constituency, Ramendra Narayan Kalita, with the Representatives of Belortol, Guwahati, at the conference hall, Panbazar, Guwahati, on Monday.
A major discussion was held regarding steps taken by GMC to date for improving the condition of the dumpsite and ways to mitigate problems faced by local inhabitants. The Commissioner, GMC, shared a detailed PPT showing ongoing works regarding the same like creating a HDPE liner at the dumpsite, installation of Trommel, development of the approach road, provision of weighbridge, earth filling of the plot. Secondary Transfer Stations segregating wet and dry wastes scientifically are to be set up soon.
MLA Ramendra Narayan Kalita stated that both short-term, as well as long-term solutions, are to be implemented for a permanent solution to the problem. The Representatives of Belortol were satisfied with the ideas put forward regarding the work by GMC and assured that they will provide all possible help to the Corporation so that waste disposal operations can be carried out without causing any problem to the local inhabitants.
Meanwhile, local people of Boragaon, Pamohi and villages near Deepor Beel have served a deadline of 15 days to the GMC to mitigate the problems they are facing due to garbage disposal at Boragaon. "The stink from the dumpsite is unbearable. It is affecting our health also," said a local resident of Boragaon.
Another resident said that the GMC has been given assurances to solve the problem but as yet no steps have been taken. "The environment is getting polluted. The quality of the soil and groundwater is getting affected. The waste dumped at Boragaon has affected Ramsar site Deepor Beel also. We will give the GMC 15 days to take up measures to resolve the waste issue. If nothing is done, after 15 days we will not allow garbage-dumping trucks to enter the area," he said.
The local residents said that they wanted Guwahati to be a clean city but they could no longer live with the stench and wanted a solution to this problem.
