GUWAHATI: Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) Mayor Mrigen Sarania on Tuesday clarified that a large number of property owners are paying property taxes in the area under GMC and that the taxes are as per the property assessments made before 2008 and a notification regarding the same will be soon published.

Mrigen Sarania said, “No fresh notification has been issued in connection with an increase in the rate. The civic body is collecting property tax at the rate fixed in 2008 and currently as many as 2,20,000 property owners are paying at that rate. But, among more than 3 lakh holding numbers, nearly 30% are paying property tax at the rate fixed in 2008 due to lack of assessment.”

He also added that the system has been rectified and all the property owners will now come under a uniform property tax saying that proper notification regarding the same will be sent to all households. Previous reports suggested a possible two-three times increase in taxes for those paying the pre-2008 rates. Several civic society organizations and local organizations protested this increase and demanded that the GMC immediately roll back the decision regarding the increment.
