GUWAHATI: The Government Railway Police (GRP) seized a total of 800 packets of illegal foreign cigarettes worth Rs 4 lakhs from the Guwahati Railway Station on Wednesday. The GRP team also apprehended a person named Manikandan R. in connection with the contraband.
At 7:30 AM on November 8, a special checking team from the Government Railway Police carried out a checking operation on Train No. 22504 down the Kanyakumari Vivek Express. A total of 80 packets consisting of 800 smaller packets suspected to be of foreign origin cigarettes were marked as ‘ESSE lights’ (total number of cigarettes: 16,000). The team also apprehended one person, namely Manikandan R, aged 25 years, the son of Ramar, who is a resident of 30/32 Muthu Ramalingam Street, PS. J-6, Dist. Chennai in Tamil Nadu. The person and seized cigarettes were handed over to the customs department.
According to sources, the goods were being smuggled in from Dimapur in Nagaland. Legal action has been initiated against the accused. Previously, a large consignment of illegal foreign cigarettes was recovered from the Boragaon locality of Guwahati, with a total value of Rs 53.60 lakh.
