GUWAHATI: "Both the government and journalists should move forward unitedly. The media highlights the grievances of the public due to which the government can address them," said Information and Public Relations Minister Pijush Hazarika on the floor of the Assam Assembly during question hour on Wednesday. The Minister underlined that the Assam government has launched several schemes for the welfare of journalists and it will continue to introduce such schemes shortly.
"Already, the government has decided to increase the monthly pension under Journalist Pension Scheme from Rs 8,000 to Rs 10,000. Another scheme is in the consideration stage. Under the scheme, if the children of a journalist score above 75 per cent in HS (Higher Secondary) examinations then he/she will get one-time assistance of Rs 50,000 from the government. Similarly, the HSLC students will get one-time assistance of Rs 30,000," said Hazarika.
He added that the Assam government is also considering introducing an insurance scheme for journalists.
